This past Wednesday was Hot Summer Nights in my local-big-town, which is an all Corvette show where they take over down town Sioux Falls, with food vendors, and several live bands. Hot Summer Nights always follows the Wednesday after Hot Harley Nights, which is a four day event of bikes (all kinds of them, not purely Harleys) food, music, bike shows, and a huge bike parade (4000+ bikes last year) with all the proceeds being donated to Make A Wish Foundation (2015 raised $175,000, plus $250,000 donated by sponsors) it’s a really cool event, but unfortunately I haven’t been able to go for the past couple years.
Anyway, back to the Corvettes. This is a pretty big show, with probably a couple hundred Vettes parked down town, and probably a couple hundred more parked outside of the actual show. It’s overwhelmingly newer Vettes, C5-C7, but there were some a few old gems in there as well.
Lovely pair of 63's, there was at least one ‘63 vert there, but these were the only two split windows I saw all night.
Being an all Corvette show, it was honestly a little boring, there’s only so many color variations and vanity plates you can see before it all starts blending together. Still, there were a couple that stood out.
And then there’s that one guy who just has to steal the show.
This car was amazing, I probably could have stared at it all night.
Overall it was a pretty fun show, I didn’t hang around for too long because I’m not much of a crowd person, nor am I a Corvette person, but it’s really cool to see all these cars in one place.
What I find even cooler than all of these Corvettes sitting at a show though, is seeing all of these Vettes on the road, which is exactly what they do. The days and weekend following Hot Summer Nights is the Black Hills Corvette Rally in Sturgis. So if you happen to be on I90 at the right time you can catch packs and packs of Corvettes headed west, which brings quite a bit of excitement to what is arguably the most boring drive in our state.
Three hours in and they don’t suspect a thing, they still think I’m one of them.

That gray c2 is simply gorgeous. I was at a small show last week and someone had a c3 with a modern LS in it. Looked pretty stock from the outside too. Although if it was a malaise era C3, giving it a LS might have been the best solution for everyone involved.
Side note, we moved to the suburbs about a month ago and I am realizing just how true the "retired guy with a corvette" trope is. Just in my immediate neighborhood, my neighbor has a c6, there are at least 2-3 C3s, and another just put a c5 out with a for sale sign on it. Not to mention my FIL just bought a C3. Some stereotypes are true I guess.

That C2 was easily the best car of the show.
I try not to stereotype, but yeah, the Corvette is definitely a car where the stereotype holds true. Can’t say I blame them though, think of the situation, you’re a bit older, the kids are out of the house, you’ve got some money saved up and would like a fun car, no need to haul people around, so a two seater is good, and you want something that looks good, but doesn’t cost a ton. The Corvette fits that bill perfectly, and there’s really no other car that does, except for maybe the Mustang.

Yeah, not to mention being older, they likely still hold onto the “American Made is Best” philosophy. I personally like the most of them aside from the C3 (malaise era ones) and C5 (plastic fantastic). I think a C4 with its clam shell hood and open wheel wheels is pretty cool, but I like to drive my cars hard and that just doesn’t seem to be part of the scene.
I will say my buddies retired mom autocrossed her c5 a few times. Dad had no interest in racing his, but she did. I honestly didn't see it in her.

I thought about going to this, but I feel the same way about corvettes, if you have seen one you have seen them all. That Gray one is pretty badass thou!

I mainly went because I’ve missed every other decent show that I’ve wanted to go to this year, and I didn’t really have anything better to do.

Young corvette owners race the shit out of ours and a great time doing so in a very fast affordable sports car, just like any other fast affordable sports car. Only difference? LS Swap is already done yo!

Good turn out this year, glad you came down! The Sioux Falls Corvette Club is a great organization that has a lot of fun putting on a great event. This is the first year in 6+ years I haven’t been 1/3 of the team running the event and it’s both sad and a relief.

Canton Car show is coming up on 7/31, come check that out. Their are usually a lot of nice cars, mostly muscle cars but its a pretty big car show.

Never been to that one, always wanted to. May or may not be helping a friend move that day but I’m going to try and make it down!

There ya go! There’s usually several good shows in the area throughout the summer, Automania is a big one that happens one town over, and if you’re into bikes Hot Harley Nights is a must see as well.

Would you believe the Summit sponsored C2 Vette (crusher 2) is one of the fastest at any given Optima ultimate street car challenge? Deadly autocross car bar none.

All boils down to physics for racers...even old ones.
